Goal

The goal of the M4T-Intermediate workshop is to help educators ensure the quality of online learning through systematic instructional design of online and blended online courses (BOL) and instructor training on online pedagogies.

Description

This intensive, four-week-long workshop is designed to engage you in theoretical and practical aspects of online learning and teaching with a Learning Management System called Moodle. By successfully completing the program you will be ready to teach blended online learning (BOL) or blended learning (BL) courses using Moodle. In the workshop, you will be introduced to online learning pedagogies and best practices. Moodle course development tools will be demonstrated, reviewed and practiced. As online learners, you will learn to understand online learning from the student's perspective so you can prepare your future courses with the learner in mind.

Workshop Context

You will collaborate in teams to design or redesign a course on your chosen topic. You will add content and resources, explore web 2.0 technologies, integrate synchronous and asynchronous learning activities into your course and develop assessments for online learning. You will also be encouraged to reflect on the process of developing your course and to share your learning experiences with your peers.

Workload & Format

M4T requires participants to be active at least 8 hours a week on theoretical and practical aspects of online learning (individually and in teams).
M4T will include asynchronous (via the Moodle) and synchronous (via WiZiQ) components.

This 4-week facilitated workshop will cover the following topics:

  • Topic 1: Connect, Communicate & Collaborate
  • Topic 2: Moodle Course Design
  • Topic 3: Moodle Course Development
  • Topic 4: Moodle Course Facilitation & Assessment

Expected Learning Outcomes

By the end of the workshop learners should be able to:

  • Use Moodle editing tools
  • Use communication tools to communicate with team members
  • Use collaboration tools to collaborate and create team documents
  • Design and develop a Moodle course in conjunction with team members based on a constructivist pedgagogy
  • Integrate web 2.0 technologies into their Moodle course
  • Add Moodle resources to their course
  • Add Moodle activities to their course
  • Critically reflect on their own and others work and provide constructive feedback for course improvement

The M4T-Advanced workshop is intended to develop educators' skills of using Moodle in online learning at the level of mastery of instructional design of online and blended online learning (BOL) to facilitate professional development programs to train educators and staff to use Moodle in its full potential.

Description

This intensive, four-week-long workshop is designed to provide you with the environment where you will apply your skills and knowledge in theoretical and practical aspects of online learning and teaching with Moodle Learning Management System. By successfully completing the program you will be ready to facilitate professional development programs and workshops using Moodle. In the workshop, you will be using online learning pedagogies and best practices, you will explore latest research and publications about Moodle, study new developments in Moodle "industry" and collaborate with colleagues on the latest issues and current research in distant learning and teaching with LMS.

Format & Workload

This workshop includes asynchronous (via Moodle) and synchronous (via WiZiQ) components. You are expected to be active at least 10 hours a week exploring and reflecting on theoretical and practical aspects of online instruction (facilitation) and learning (individually and in teams).

Context

You will work individually to design or redesign a course or a professional development program on your chosen topic. You will add content and resources, explore web 2.0 technologies, integrate synchronous and asynchronous learning activities into your course and develop assessments for online learning/teaching. You will also be encouraged to reflect on the process of developing your course/program and to share your learning experiences with your peers. The final learning outcome of the advanced workshop will be a "Moodle for Teachers" professional development program/course. Additionally, you will work collaboratively to design a Live* online session on one of the four weekly topics.


Expected Learning Outcomes


By the end of the workshop you will:


  • Examine the latest publications on the issues of distance, BOL education and teaching with LMS/Moodle and provide critical analysis of theoretical and practical aspects of the field research about workshop topics.
  • Make informed decisions about suitable educational pedagogies for online/blended learning courses
  • Use Moodle and Web 2.0 tools to create an interactive learning environment and to collaborate and create team documents
  • Add  a variety of Moodle resources to your program/course
  • Add Moodle activities to their course. 
  • Facilitate Live Sessions using web-conferencing tools.
  • Select/Create and use a diverse arsenal of Moodle activities including plugin modules (e/g.,: Lesson, workshop, Sloodle, mobile, and Webquests)
  • Critically reflect on your own and others' work and provide constructive feedback for program/course improvement
  • Design and develop a Moodle Professional Development Program/course in conjunction with team members/or individually based on a constructivist/connectivist pedagogy
  • Schedule and lead using synchronous, live WiZiQ or other web-conferencing platforms to promote the topics of innovative learning and teaching in your PD program.

Tentative Schedule

This 5-week facilitated workshop will potentially address the following topics:

  • Week 2: Moodle Course Design. "Why Moodle? What Moodle is for Me? Education 2.0 and Constructivist Platform of Moodle."

  • Week 4: Moodle Course Facilitation & Assessment. "The Future of Education. Moodle 2.0, 3.0? Education N.0?"

Certification

Participants who have successfully completed the workshop will be eligible for a Certificate of Completion. Successful completion of the workshop is defined as completing 80-85% of the workshop work and the final project.

Free Orientation Workshop (M4T-O)

 

February 9 - February 28, 2011


M4T-O workshop is intended to provide people who have never used Moodle with the knowledge and skills to navigate a Moodle course and access resources and activities
from a student perspective as well as to practice the the same resources and activities in the class sandbox. 
IT4ALL embraces a life long learning skills where participants
become responsible for their own learning. The facilitators will facilitate and guide you in the process but ultimately, you are in charge of your own learning. Please make suggestions,
add comments, and most importantly, ask questions. Your questions will help you and others learn.
The workshop will include both asynchronous (not dependent on time) and
synchronous (time dependent) learning environments. The asynchronous will be conducted on IT4ALL Moodle and the synchronous learning environment will be conducted on WiZiQ
 through IT4ALL Moodle.

Goal

The goal of the M4T-Orientation workshop is to prepare you for learning in an online environment. You will learn to understand online learning from the student's perspective so you can prepare your future courses with the learner in mind.

Description

This intensive, three-week-long workshop is designed to engage you in theoretical and practical aspects of online learning with a Learning Management System called Moodle. You will be introduced to the Moodle philosophy and course tools. By successfully completing the program you will have acquired the knowledge and skills needed to successfully communicate and collaborate with your peers in an online learning environment.

Workshop Context

In the workshop each participant will practice working as a "student" in the resources and activities provided in the learning management system of Moodle.

Workload & Format

M4T-O requires participants to be active at least 5 hours a week on theoretical and practical aspects of online learning by participating in discussions and completing assignments.
M4T-O will include asynchronous (via Moodle - a course management system) and synchronous (via WiZiQ - a web conferencing tool) components.

Workshop Layout

This three-week facilitated workshop will cover the following topics:

  • Topic 1: Course Layout & Navigation.   Learn how to navigate in a Moodle course and the broader Moodle environment.
  • Topic 2: Introductions.   Learn how to update your Moodle profile and post responses to online forum discussions.
  • Topic 3: Successful Online Learning.   Learn about the skills needed to be a successful online learner.
  • Topic 4: Online Communication & Collaboration.   Learn why it is important to create a supportive learning environment.
  • Topic 5: Moodle Resources.   Learn about and use some of the basic "resources" available in Moodle. (eg: labels, web links, file links, compose web pages)
  • Topic 6: Moodle Activities.   Learn about and complete some of the basic "activities" available in Moodle (eg: forum, choice, assignments) 

Learning Objectives

By the end of the workshop learners should be able to:

  • Navigate around the Moodle site and course areas
  • View participant profiles, blogs and course activities log
  • Change their password and edit their profile 
  • Post entries in forums
  • Explain what skills are required to be a successful online learner

You will be introduced to the Moodle philosophy and course development tools. In the workshop you will be randomly assigned to work in a team to collaboratively design, develop and facilitate a lesson in your area of teaching. Each person in the team will develop a lesson with example activities and resources. You will also be encouraged to reflect on the process of developing your lesson and to share your learning experiences with your peers.

Workload & Format

M4T-B requires participants to be active at least 5 hours a week on theoretical and practical aspects of online learning (individually and in teams).
M4T-B will include asynchronous (via Moodle - a course management system) and synchronous (via WiZiQ - a web conferencing tool) components.

Workshop Layout

This 4 week facilitated workshop will cover the following topics:

  • Topic 1: Getting Started. Learn how to use the various editing tools and how to work with files and folders from a teacher perspective.
  • Topic 2: Moodle Resources. Learn how to add common Moodle "resources" eg: a label, a webpage, a link to a web site and a link to a file.
  • Topic 3: Moodle Activities. Learn how to add common "Moodle "activities" eg: forum, choice, assignments, wikis etc.
    Research suitable activities and develop a lesson with example activities and resources. 
  • Topic 4: Share & Evaluate. Complete the lessons developed by your team members and provide feedback for improvements. 


Expected Learning Outcomes

By the end of the workshop learners should be able to:

  • Update course settings
  • View participant profiles, blogs and course activities log
  • Use Moodle editing tools to add content
  • Add resources and activities to a blank Moodle course to create a basic lesson

Certification

The Facilitators will issue you with a Certificate on successful completion of the workshop.
